Dancing with migraines

As a result of being sick so many days a week, I am not fit. When my neurologist suggested that I take up HIIT to improve my strength and stamina and improve my overall health and wellbeing, I quickly realized it was not for me. The sudden movements just made the pain in my head so much worse, and increasing my heart rate made me giddy.

What I did discover, however, is that on days when I was not feeling too bad, dancing was manageable, especially video lessons run ‘for seniors’.  Provided the movements were not too fast or erratic, I could keep up and felt the benefits of loosening muscles and relieving tension.

That said, the majority of videos out there, such as ‘Zumba’ and ‘cardio dance’, involve a fast pace and hard to follow moves – even when labelled ‘easy for beginners’.  There are a few options available for people with limited fitness that are worth exploring however, and if you do, always start slow, be aware of your own limitations and consult a doctor before proceeding… and don’t forget to re-fuel (food and hydration wise) before and after.
