Qigong for migraines

Similar but different to Tai Chi, Qigong has provided another set of invaluable techniques for my migraine recovery. Slow and steady, with a focus on posture, breathing, and the energy that runs through your body, I’m yet to find a movement that hurts my head; even the head-tapping was more pleasant than I expected! Now, whilst practicing Tai Chi in the morning, I often incorporate extra moves taken from Qigong videos (who doesn’t love a move titled ‘wise owl gazing backwards’!).

With a 2,000 year history too detailed to review here, the name ‘Qi-gong’ comes from the Chinese ‘qi’ which means breath or life energy, and ‘gong’ which relates to skill or mastering a skill. Qigong cultivates mindful wellness through a series of movements which co-ordinate mind, breath and body.

Whilst the movements are generally very slow and easy to follow, the quality of the available videos is variable. Sometimes the background alone is spectacular and makes it calming to follow, other times it feels like the guide talks too much. The trick is to find a teacher that you like, and work your way through their channel, mixing it up every now and then with alternative classes.

Don’t forget to check with your doctor that these exercises are right for you, and always take it easy, especially if you’re feeling unwell:
