Mindfulness… just sew

Published by

Sewing, cross-stitch, embroidery, knitting… they are all mindful techniques that can create a deep sense of relaxed concentration that becomes something of a state of Zen.  Truly!

I’ve recently been trying long-stitch, and I’m often surprised at how much I get ‘lost in the moment’ and ‘time flies’.  It is the perfect combination of repetition and attention.  You have to concentrate on what you’re doing, but not in a way that you feel overwhelmed or stressed, you sink into ‘the zone’.

It reminds me a little bit of when I used to swim laps (when I was training for a trek in Nepal (decades ago)).  You follow a line, this way that, over and over, back and forth.  The little embroideries I’m making however, are far less taxing on my body, and I don’t have to wash my hair when I’m done!

The new hobby came about when our local department store was having a super-sale.  The store tends to have all the latest and greatest fads, keeping everyone happy for the month that painting is ‘in’, or ‘make your own sushi’ is all the rage.  Then, in a heartbeat, the world has moved on from that arts-and-crafty-cooking-thing, and whatever is left on the shelf has to be sold at a mega discount to make room for the next month’s latest and greatest thing.  So it was; I noticed a batch of little timber hoops with pre-printed patterns on canvas sheets and enough thread to finish them off.  The packet assured me they were straight forward, so I took a few home.

Next school holiday I pulled a couple out and everyone in the family had a go.  One daughter made the wing of a galah, my husband made a leaf for birdie’s branch, whilst the other daughter was putting petals on a waratah flower (one of our national emblems).  By the end of the long weekend, we’d made two little hoops, and by and large, everyone had had enough.  But there were more hoops to make… so slowly over time, my eldest daughter and I kept working on a parrot and a butterfly, and more recently, I did my best on some texts:

This is an image of three long-stitch embroidery hoops that include a bird, be kind and love motifs, all helpful as a mindfulness activity.

When I finish my ‘LOVE’ panel, I think I’m going to see if I can find some blank canvas and a timber hoop and make my own design.  Something short and pithy and appropriate to my holistic healing journey.  Here’s a couple of ideas I’ve had (it’s much easier to make things in pretend than sew them… but you never know):

This is an image of 4 potential long-stitch designs that say well(ish), so so, iffy, and mind-full.

I’m leaning towards “IFFY” as the most achievable.  Care to vote on which one I should try?  Or maybe you have a different (short) saying that could work?  Don’t hold your breath for a finished result – but I’ll try to be done by Christmas… 2025!

Until then, take care and as the hoop says; “BE KIND”.

Fantastic work! My daughter is just getting into embroidery. Such a healing way to spend a few hours. And great if you have obsessive habits like biting nails etc. It really seems to calm her down. Out of the four designs I’d vote for so-so!

Thank you! There really is something about the repetition of many small movements that makes it a form of self-soothing. I think the trick is to focus on the doing, not the end product (or your mind starts to switch back into anxiety-mode and become hyper-vigilant about the quality of your work and blah blah blah… the mindfulness moment is broken!) Hope your daughter continues to find peace in the craft, and thank you so much for being here! xx

Ahhhh!!! I collect embroidery hoop art – I have so many of them around my room. I should really make a blog post about them, thanks for the inspiration!! I

I’ve really wanted to get into this hobby, but I’m not really good at sewing and other by hand activities (my hands tend to shake!) Maybe I’ll try it out, when I get less intimidated.

Hope you’re having a great day and you’re doing well! 🙂

Don’t be intimidated, just keep it simple… the hoops we bought looked very ‘fine and fancy’ on the cover, but what we made was ‘crude and clumsy’ … but once they’re up on the wall, no one can tell, and I’m just proud of our efforts! Xx happy to inspire xx

    Dear Linda,

Hello! Thank you for visiting and commenting on my post entitled “👁️ The Purview of SoundEagle🦅 According to ChatGPT 💬 and the Incredulous 🤔 in the Age of God-like Technology 🚀“, which examines a large number of issues about AI and ChatGPT, and how they affect us as consumers, thinkers, artists, writers, bloggers, publishers and other roles in society. I shall reply to you there as soon as I can.

I took the liberty to visit some of your posts and your “About” page, and discovered that you have been publishing quite frequently about various issues regarding chronic migraine, which has afflicted you profoundly. I concur with you that “[s]ewing, cross-stitch, embroidery, knitting… they are all mindful techniques”. They are also works of art worthy of being treasured. I personally collect them.

Sewing aside, in our modern, materialistic and often hectic society, living in the present moment must not to be trivialized, unheeded or forgotten. From time to time, we must stop and smell the roses. I have had my fair share of exploring living in the present moment. A good example is my visually enticing discussions of some perennially useful ideas and philosophies presented in great detail in a highly engaging and expansive post entitled “🔄📈📉 Change Rules and Moment Matters: How to Stay in the Moment 🔖🕰️🔂“, published at

Please turn on your finest speakers or headphones, as the said post will be playing one of my musical compositions to you automatically. It is preferrable to use a desktop or laptop computer with a large screen to view the rich multimedia contents available for heightening your multisensory enjoyment at my blog, as the limitations of iPad, iPhone, tablet or other portable devices frequently result in very dissatisfactory and highly problematic handling of the complexities of my blog contents, severely curtailing their readability and distorting their formats.

Hopefully, this post can be of considerable interest to you, insofar as I have distilled a great deal of observations and conclusions along similar themes. One of the investigated areas concerns being present in the moment with awareness and (engaged) mindfulness. There are also detailed analyses on existential issues, including those pertaining to “change” as well as “being” and “becoming”.

As for which sewing option you would like to try, I am inclined to choose “MINDFUL”.

Happy June to you! Wishing you a fine winter doing or enjoying whatever that satisfies you the most, whether aesthetically, physically, intellectually or spiritually, including that which pertains to living in the present moment!

    Yours sincerely,

Thank you; I will go across and check out your link! It is a strange coincidence, because just this morning I was journalling about the difference between ‘being’ and ‘becoming’ and sketching caterpillars and butterflies… again, thank you for being here, and I look forward to visiting you more often! Needlework of all kinds have been meditative activities for women for a long, long time. I’ve crocheted, mended and embroidered all my life ~ also a lifelong meditator ~ so I know this feeling of entrancement. I think the rhythmic flash of the needle might have something to do with it …

My mother brought me a sewing basket when I was home sick with the flu; I was maybe 8 or so; I still have this basket. She taught me basic stitches. When I was 10, she gave me a sampler for Christmas; it took me quite a while to work it but now it’s framed on & the wall in my library.

My grandmother taught me how to knit & crochet & how to do needlepoint.

I have a sewing machine; when we were in highschool, we were always making our own clothes. We always had original & cool outfits. This was in the 70s. Material is so expensive now it isn’t cost-effective to sew your own clothes now but it was really economical back then.

When my aunt passed, I got all of her needlework crafts; I have several that I am working on. Of course, I have so many other artwork to work on! There’s not enough hours in the day for everything I want to do!

IFFY looks a great choice… And sewing crafts of any kind I find soothing, relaxing and stress releasing… If I am not painting, then I am crocheting or knitting.. Its been a while since I did embroidery.. I did that in my first years of marriage, I embroidered the corners of a tablecloth… So I know the amount of time and patience it takes…
Wonderful you had your daughters also get creating… LOVED all of them… And what a cool store to have different crafty themes to choose from..

Have a wonderful week and many thanks for your KIND visits over at Dreamwalker’s Sanctuary… Much appreciated.. ❤ xx 🙏💖

Yes, but like you said, “iffy” alone doesn’t mean much. I would never guess it had to do with migraines. Love the flower background. MigrainIFIC! LOL – there is something there…
