Hydration (Part Three)

Published by

on

I’ve written about how we need to keep our bodies hydrated, and how drinking lots of water leads to lots of weeing, and both posts mentioned the recurring phrase of “drink more water!” Today is one last post on hydration based on some feedback from the first two posts: there is such a thing as drinking TOO MUCH water.

[Disclaimer – I’m not a doctor – I’m just summarizing what I research on the internet, so PLEASE be sure to speak to your health care providers to get the correct information, specific to your personal situation, before making any alterations to your healing routine.]

Over-hydration is called “water intoxication” or Hyponatremia.

If you drink too much water too quickly, your kidney can’t process the fluid, so the sodium levels in your bloodstream drop, which in turn causes your cells to become super-saturated. If the weather is humid and you’re drinking a lot of extra water, it can combine with the process of sweating (where you also lose your body-salts) to make the issue worse. If you’re a woman, then your chances of overhydration increase again, because hormones also interfere with your sodium levels.

Signs that you might have drunk too much water are that you may feel dizzy, fatigued, nauseous, bloated and irritable. You may also get a headache, because the brain swells and pushes against the skull (eek).

[Not going to lie – these symptoms sound like me every day of the week!!!]

At its absolute worst, overhydration can lead to seizures, coma and in very rare cases – death.

If you do think that you might have overhydrated yourself (your wee will be crystal clear) – stop drinking and eat something salty to try to recalibrate your body.

[For me, I have days where I suspect I have overdone it with too much water, so I switch to a sports drink for a while that has electrolytes in it – it seems to work for me, but I have also read that coconut water is another good substitute.]

It is true that it is generally rare for the body to become overhydrated.
Below you can see the amounts of water that a healthy body needs.

The human need for water depending on their age and provided that they eat a balanced diet that contains sufficient amounts of vegetables and fruits, which are the main source of fluids for the body, is as follows:

1-3 year old children, 3-4 glasses* of water

4–8 year old children, 4-5 glasses* of water

9–13 year old children, 6-8 glasses* of water

14–18 year old children, 8-10 glasses* of water

    >18 years old, 6-8 glasses* of water

Pregnant women, 7-9 glasses* of water

Breastfeeding women, 9-11 glasses* of water

    (*)1 glass = 250 ml

Also add another 2 glasses of water every day, if you exercise or even more depending on the exercise and its duration.

Add more water if you live and much more if you do manual work, especially in a hot climate.

Great tips – thank you – the guidelines are often “drink more” – but don’t tell you how much – so I’m grateful for this clear quantity checklist – thank you kindly!! xx

My sister lives in Arizona and never leaves the house without a huge bottle or two of water. She adds mineral drops and/or a few drops of essential oils. I have been adding a pinch of sea salt and a few mineral drops to mine lately. Possibly related: I used to have bad leg cramps, and they’ve stopped. πŸ™‚

Great comment! I have heard that magnesium is good for muscle cramps… I have some mineral powder that I put in mine too – I’m not sure if it helps, but it doesn’t seem to hurt! Thanks for being here, you’re always welcome! xx

Excellent information Linda ❀ and a balancing act! I actually love water and have over-done it … also my love for salt! Not into the energy drinks, loaded with sugar … so I will sip in moderation. You may not be a doctor, but your kind of medicine is curing me! Thanks for sharing! πŸ™‚

I love salty snacks (pretzels, trail mix, any kind of nuts) so getting the right balance isn’t a problem for me.

I really love chocolate-covered pretzels. The sweet & the salt!

    With water or unsweetened tea!

Chocolate-covered-pretzels! I’ve never heard of such a thing, but will have to go out and find them – it sounds like the perfect combination!

(I must be hungry sorry – I’m supposed to be focused on the healing but my mind went straight to the food comment!)

You never heard of them? Well ~ I had never heard of Lamingtons before I got this year’s kitchen calendar that features food from around the world. Lamingtons look AWESOME.

You can buy them anywhere around here. I like the dark chocolate ones better than the milk chocolate ones. You can get yogurt-covered ones, too.

Lots of recipe website feature recipes on how to make them for yourself & how to decorate them for the holidays … adding pretty sprinkles for Christmas, for example. I’ve never done that but I might this year.

🌞 Great posts Linda! I drink lots of water, but not enough to get to this point in this post… My favourite drink is coke cola. Would you believe, I have never tried a energy drink? Recently though I have been considering trying them out… Maybe tomorrow for our Annual Regatta Day..

Just remember with energy drinks that the soda-like ones have a LOT of caffeine in them (some brands are banned in Australia as too strong) but the colored-water ones are pretty safe (just lots of sugar). Love a coke on my migraine days! Hope the Regatta went well and teh weather was fab! xx

I think it is pretty hard to do – but not impossible – especially if you drink a lot in a very short amount of time – here’s to “responsible drinking!” 🀣

I’ve always heard about the importance of drinking water, but this post sheds light on the less talked about issue of over-hydration. Your advice is practical and based on solid information. Great job!🀝🌷

Good job on this warning. It would likely take some doing to over hydrate, but it can be done.

I used to think it was ‘impossible’ but I’m starting to think I might be over-doing it at the moment because I’m keeping up my ‘summer’ drinking habits when we’re in the middle of winter!! x
