Are you a human being or a human doer?

Last Sunday, when I was ironing school uniforms and office shirts for the week ahead, I was listening to one of my mindfulness/migraine-related-podcasts.  Itโ€™s something I started doing when I DJ-mixed-up my lifeโ€™s playlist: do a not-so-favorite chore at the same time as another activity that youโ€™re keen on; old with new, good with bad, as it were.

Anyway โ€“ the podcast that I listed to was an interview between Oprah Winfrey (who needs no introduction) and Jon Kabat-Zinn (who is a pioneer in mindfulness for pain relief).

(Hereโ€™s the podcast on Spotify: Jon Kabat-Zinn: Mindfulness 101 – Oprah’s Super Soul | Podcast on Spotify)

(And hereโ€™s the playlist of all the podcasts Iโ€™ve been collecting that have helped me heal: Migraine podcasts – playlist by TheMindfulMigraine.Blog | Spotify)

Anyway, anyway – about one third of the way through the interview, Dr Kabat-Zinn said something in passing that really jumped out at me.  I didnโ€™t write it down, so I might be a bit off target, but it was something to the effect of; โ€œthereโ€™s an old clichรฉ that we are human BEINGS not human DOERSโ€ฆ our purpose in life is to BE not to DO.โ€

He then went on to say something like, โ€œremember that early humans ended the day beside the fire, all staring into the embers, daydreaming, listening to each other tell stories, feeling the warmth on their skin, perhaps half-listening out for unusual sounds from beyond the firelight’s haloโ€ฆ there was nothing to doโ€ฆ they just enjoyed that moment for what it wasโ€ฆ they were just being themselves.โ€

Dr Kabat-Zinn spoke of it in passing, but for me, it made me stop and have a massive ah-ha moment.ย  I am always DOING something, or waiting until I can finish doing this something so I can move on to doing something different, half the time when I daydream, I’m dreaming of doing something dreamyโ€ฆ

Mindfulness is a reminder to stop doing, and just BE.

Be present.

Be aware.

Be grateful.

Be curious.

You can still do things, but be in the moment when you do it.

It sounds simple, and sometimes it is. Sometimes I feel like everything I do is close to a moving meditation.

Other times, not so much.  Ironing while listening to a podcast โ€“ thatโ€™s kind of double-doingโ€ฆ but sometimes I hit pause and take a moment to let the words sink in.  I stop ironing, I recheck in on my posture (am I in Power-pose mode or doing Pug-puppy-face?), I check in on my breath.  For a few moments, I just am who I am.  Iโ€™m just being me in the momentโ€ฆ

And then I go back to ironing-listening-learning, and double-do-doing.

Later in the conversation, Ms Winfrey remembered something Dr Kabat-Zinn had said to her in a previous interview that had stayed with her: โ€œwhen youโ€™re in the shower, just be in the showerโ€ฆ donโ€™t be in thinking about the past, donโ€™t be forecasting yourself into the future, donโ€™t be in the board room, or in the midst of your last fightโ€ฆ just be in the shower!โ€

Concentrate on the sensation of water, of warmth, (or โ€˜coolthโ€™), listen to the sound of falling water, watch which way the water spirals down the drain.

The past is finished, the future can wait, and you sure as heck donโ€™t need to be surrendering a moment of serenity to your mental itty bitty sh!tty committee and their board members!

I think my chronic migraines are a consequence (at least in part) of becoming a constantly busy, Human Doer.

I want to be a Human Being.

Iโ€™m not sure exactly how to be a Human Being and make sure the ironing all gets done, but Iโ€™m going to give it my best shotโ€ฆ when I iron-listen-learn, Iโ€™ll iron-listen-learn, Iโ€™ll call my mind back into the moment and ask it not to drift off into the past or the future or cringey boardroom-showers.

And if I can do it (…do being?…) then so can you!

Take care my lovely fellow human beings, Linda x

[…] Birding is a form of mindfulness for adults. It’s often hard to make the time to walk in the woods. Without a reason to be there, it might feel like an indulgence to just ‘go walking’. But, if we attach a purpose to our traipsing, then the meanderings feel more guilt-free: “look! I’m busy doing something!” (As I’ve mentioned before, instead of living as human-beings, so many of us are hardwired to act as human-doers.) […]

This hits home for me! I am constantly the voice in my friends’ head pleading for them to stop DOing things in life that doesn’t bring them happiness.

Well, as long as your voice in their head has a polite tone of voice; I say good for you! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Getting used to being after years of being programmed on doing is an interesting adjustment! I found that it was all about the balance. We’re allowed to be on doing mode as long as we’re willing to stop and be mindful when inspiration tickles us. Pausing to check on where we actually are and remaining conscious definitely keeps us on track with ourselves. Sometimes following our drifting mind can lead to answers, as long as we’ve gotten to know how our mind works and balances.

I like the idea of giving yourself permission to be an intentional ‘doer’ whilst acknowledging that there’s room to ‘be’ when the mood strikes… it’s all about balance as you suggest! L xx

I really relate to this, Linda, thank you so much for placing this clarifying pin on it. When I was preparing to retire, so many people would immediately ask, what are you going to do now? I felt sheepish, but really, my answer was: Nothing! Really, that meant I wanted to be at home, doing the little things that got pushed aside by my working life of so many decades. And so I appreciate reading and listening and watching and husband tasks and being โ€ฆ happy!

๐Ÿคฃyes… including the human element is a big step up out of the amoeba mud – yay you! I get the feeling from your blog and comments that you’re a Human THINKER / FEELER… you seem to do the present in the moment thing well, and let your mind wonder…

As I have said previously. Balance: easy to say, not so easy to execute.
