Rise (and rise again)

Music makes a huge difference to my ability to deal with pain… and life’s ups and downs in general. I have a channel over on Spotify where I collect relaxing music to listen to when I have a migraine so that I feel less lonely lying around in the dark. I also have a number of go-to songs that lift my spirits and get stuck on loop in my mind.

In one of those weird moments when the universe sends you quirky signals you feel compelled to listen to, I realized yesterday that two songs I hum to have different vibes but the same name: Rise.

In the past, Katy Perry’s “Rise” used to reinvigorate me when I was feeling like everything was a bit too hard. There is something in her determination that always made me get up and get going. Lyrics that make my heart race include the opening sequence:

I won’t just survive
Oh, you will see me thrive

Can’t write my story
I’m beyond the archetype
I won’t just conform
No matter how you shake my core
‘Cause my roots, they run deep, oh

Oh, ye of so little faith
Don’t doubt it, don’t doubt it
Victory is in my veins
I know it, I know it
And I will not negotiate
I’ll fight it, I’ll fight it
I will transform…

*

More recently, I have become obsessed with a song with the same name but a completely different mood. Whilst the song by folk musicians Yaima, also emphasizes transformation, it feels less about personal elevation, more of a global and esoteric attitude. It starts:

If you’re searching for the answer
To the riddle here on Earth
The riddle’s gone unanswered
From the moment of its birth

Searching for the answers
So many would pursue
In favor of their honor
She provided just one clue

Rise up from the ashes
You decide which way to go
Either up, down or sideways
Then you’ll need to know
You will rise like a flame
Rise, live again…

*

If you’re the sort of person who feels comfortable writing and repeating affirmations (“I am strong – I am capable – I’ve got this”) then pop over to my RESOURCES page and download a file that includes several. If, on the other hand, you feel awkward chanting yay-yay statements, then listen to the lyrics of affirmative songs instead (my playlist is here). They can remind you that you are strong and capable, with the accompaniment of foot tapping, hip swaying music rather than a rah-rah-rah fist-pump.

In recognition of the healing power of music, I’ve opened up my Spotify playlist “Musical Affirmations” for collaboration (I think it only stays open for a week) – so please, feel free to pop across and add a song that acts like a call to action and motivates you to keep going.

CLICK HERE: musical affirmation playlist – collaboration link

(And if you have a song in mind, but not a Spotify account, or the link doesn’t work – or just as a shout out to help everyone else – be sure to leave the details in the comment section below – I’ll upload the song for you!!)

Until then, keep singing, (or humming) and keep rising to new heights!

Take care, Linda x

PS – I can’t believe it, but my 11 month anniversary of The Mindful Migraine Blog is today – this year is FLYING by soooo fast! Because I only realized this just now, I don’t have my usual long blogroll lined up… but here’s four fab blogs that I’ve enjoyed visiting recently and whose readers have been super-dooper supportive of my blog:

+ Diabesties Chat – Diabetes can be better!

+ Élodie angel emmett

+ macalderblog

+ Willie Torres Jr. – Christian Writings, Testimonies, Prayers and Inspiration

PS – sorry if I confused you all yesterday – I’ll keep blogging until the end of the week to maintain my habit for 2024, then head off on holiday!

PPPS – I have no idea whether these embedded videos work on all devices, for all people, in all countries – but – fingers crossed, here’s the two songs with the same name that inspire me.

That is so true – and the great thing about music is that you can find the song that resonates with you most in the moment, then move on to another song when it doesn’t… and then come back to the first song and feel the energy all over again! Music really is incredible! L xx

Yes, all good so far. I am making a concerted effort to practice gratitude 1st thing in the morning and last thing at night and I am really trying hard to practice mindfulness. I am determined to be more positive. I hope things are good with you and keep the great blog posts coming xx

Thanks as always – I’m turning on my computer and getting ready to start up blogging again tomorrow – the holidays have gone sooo fast! Like you, I’m also trying hard to be grateful – it’s still a bit too easy for me to fall into feeling a bit sorry for myself – but I believe that if we practice, practice, practice, we’re inching our way towards better inner-health and a positive attitude – here’s to both of us rocking out positively in 2025! xoxoxox

Beautiful post to charge my journey’s memories. Rise by Katy Perry was my song to get me back to myself after my stroke. The lyrics reminded me of my journey during epilepsy and what I wanted to be. Try Everything by Shakira was another one that motivated and reminded me. It’s one that made me feel more playful because of Zootopia. Wow, this post caught me right when I’m trying to accept and review everything I’ve been through. 🙃

Try Everything is one of my favorite go to songs as well (and I always have a bunny leaping through my mind’s eye as I listen to it!) Sometimes I find the manifesting affirmations too contrived – but music… music and their wonderful lyrics always work to help my mood! Best wishes for the festive season, take lovely and thank you for being such a wonderful supporter of the blog, I’m super grateful! 🎄❤️

Thank you for sharing your Spotify channel (I’m now following)! Music has always been my source of comfort and peace. Don’t get me wrong—God is first and foremost my Comforter—but even when I pray or talk to Him, music helps set the mood. It clears away struggles, anxieties, and worries, allowing me to feel at peace. Once I’m in that space, I can focus on whatever is next—whether it’s writing, blogging, eating, watching TV, or praying.

My music preferences depend entirely on my mood. I listen to just about everything except hip-hop and rap. When I’m stressed or overwhelmed, alternative, indie, and Christian music are my go-to comforts. When I’m excited, it’s usually country or alternative. If I’m in the summer vibe or dreaming of it, I lean toward reggae, Hawaiian reggae, salsa, or oldies but goodies. And when I’m stressed or irritated, I turn to rock or blues.

Even in my car, I need my music. It’s not just background noise; it’s an essential part of my life that helps me reset and recharge.

👏I agree! Music is so wonderful the way that it shifts to suit your mood… so curious to go investigate “Hawaiian reggae” that is a new genre for me! Here’s hoping 2025 is filled with prayers and music 💜

I love Hawaiian Reggae. It’s a type of reggae music that mixes traditional reggae with Hawaiian culture. It has the usual reggae rhythms, like the offbeat guitar, but also includes tropical melodies and instruments like the `ukulele, steel guitar, and slack-key guitar, giving it a unique sound.

Summer??? 😎 Oh, I’m so jealous. It’s a chilly 25 degrees here today 🥶 (so cold!). I’m actually listening to Hawaiian Reggae right now 🎶🌺, I have quite a few tracks on my Spotify playlist. My wife and boys totally hate it 😂

That’s very affirming indeed, Linda. The act of listing music that makes you feel good reminds me of one project back when my job was music reviewer at this city’s daily newspaper. I decided to make a list of my 100 favorite songs of all time for the Weekend edition. That was fun … but surely not easy as many emotions raced through my mind, body and soul. I hoped the readers felt the same.

Yes, music is so good for lifting spirits! So many times when I’ve felt really blue, I’ve turned to music and found the soothing relieve I was looking for. Music is not just great for it’s soothing effects, but it can also put words to complicated emotions that might be difficult to understand.
