Brains in glass jars

My eldest daughter is studying Posthumanism at school for a research project and it got me thinking… Do you remember those old sci-fi horror movies where a disembodied brain was floating in a giant tank of clear or cloudy liquid?  Or the various versions of Frankenstein’s monster and the stories of the body snatchers?  Are you old enough, I wonder, to have seen the television series about Steve Austin “The Bionic Man” who was an injured soldier (I think) who got jacked up with medical miracles to become a hybrid machine-man, operating better than before?

Hoping to get an image to help me along, I asked an AI art generator to show me “a lady who keeps her brain in a jar” and this is what I got:

“Sweet” comes to mind… which wasn’t where I was headed (pun intended)… although it does make me weirdly tempted to get a purple-rinse for my gray hair!

Anyway – the point I set out to make is that the line between science and sci-fi has always been blurry.  Mary Shelley apparently wrote her novel “Frankenstein” (1818) because she had heard about real ‘reanimation’ experiments, in which the legs of dead frogs twitched when an electric current was sent through our poor froggy friends… and later humans…

In terms of today’s medical (mechanical) miracles, you can get a cochlear implant to improve your hearing.  Dodgy hip?  Have a porcelain and metal installation.  Trippy-ticker?  Get a pacemaker.  It gets far weirder when you take into account ‘out there’ options such as cryogenic freezers.

‘Out there’, that is, for now.

It made me wonder what a sci-fi take on migraine treatments of the future might look like.  What bio-engineered wonders (or monstrosities) will be invented – and will they benefit the creator or the patient? Could we organize a think tank on brain tanks?

I googled the future of migraine management and got a lot of pharmaceutical pages and a couple of neuromodulation ads, and not much else.

This time, when I asked the AI art generator to show me a futuristic migraine saving device, I got these:

I think I like the lolly-lady better… here’s hoping that migraine inventions are more natural than this.  I for one, do NOT want to wear half a car-engine on my head! (Although I’d love to wear those ice-blue eyes around for a weekend!)

Take care taking care, Linda x.

PS – I went back and tried some other AI filters for the lady who keeps her brain in a jar… I’ll leave their strange ethereal glow here to disturb your sleep for the night – you can thank me tomorrow… or not:

four images of ladies holding brains in jars

PPS – is it just me, or is there something very funny about matching the color of your clothes and makeup to your brain?!?

Yes, sometimes it makes me laugh, sometimes it makes me queasy – this time it was a bit of both! thanks as always for dropping by, Linda xx

I remember Futurama used to have a field day with heads in jars, like Nixon or whatever. Of course their heads were awake and animated and causing trouble. Then there were the Mi-Go from the old H.P. Lovecraft stories. Their brains in jars were having nowhere near as good a time as Mr. Nixon in Futurama.

Lovecraft used to scare me senseless as a teen, even though most of the spookiness was only in the mood not the action. And yes, loved the craziness of Futurama, great example I should have included! I Think that as much as my head has been a nuisance, I’ll be taking it with me at the end! 🙃

It is a weird idea having to try to separate humans from machines… the line used to be clear cut but now it’s getting blurry… although I remain machine-part-free (for now!) xx

Some of those ‘things’ surrounding the first brain of a lady in a jar, look a bit like lollipops … or maybe I’m just craving something sweet. 😊 AI frightens me a bit …

I saw lollies too… so I must be hungry as well… I find it amusing… but freaky… it gets close to some semblance of reality, but always feels a bit off… which might be a good thing, because it helps us to spot it’s not real… time will tell I guess. Have a wonderful weekend, L xx

    Hi Linda,
It’s crazy how a school project can make us spiral through thoughts. It’s a scary thought that to help with migraines, a halo contraption is the best answer. It is also not surprising that you got a ton of pharmaceutical pages. Probably not a lot of self or herbal healing. Most of the meds I have tried for migraines do not react well with me. I am usually stuck with finding a dark space and still covering my eyes and a few naproxin. I figure one day I will be able to find something better. But, according to the AI generator, that will be a lot of mechanics. Seems worse to me. As for the lolly lady to the creepy lady, those were awesome!!!! Kitt ☺️

Thanks Kitt! I agree – I don’t see any comfort being offered from such heavy enormous contraptions, and you’re right, there was very little talk of a med-free future for people with migraines (which is a shame) – I’m still a big believer in having a good lie down (I think that’s what our bodies are craving) combined with some other relaxation techniques to calm our nervous system down. (I too have had to try a couple of different medications, and in different combinations, to find things that seem to work – but rest and destress are my biggest saviors). Have a wonderful weekend lovely❣️

That shade of brain, I mean blush really brings out your eyes (lol). 😉 Ohhh, what a marvelous question to mull over. Wish our futuristic selves could just look at a color and that miraculously ties up loose ends or seals any cracks in the “code”. Or a technique like meditation where you focus on the mind as seedlings growing in the sunshine. Of course, its pharma and cars on heads! I’m going back in the jar, aren’t I? Fun post and creepy haunting images! Loved it! 😀

Thank you – as one AI experimenter to another, there is a certain joy to the unexpectedness that AI throws up that makes it so addictive… if I had more time (and money) I’d like to find ways to merge different images through AI and try to take it next level, but for now it’s just fun to admire those ice-blue eyes and feel disheartened that heavy metal might be all that the future holds for us! L xx

Yep… me too… except I keep thinking of those lollipop vibes from the first picture and craving some sugar… but I need to pass on that too as too much of it is no good for my migraine-brain!! ❣️
