I DO want to be a content creator!

Published by

on

Many (many) weeks ago, I wrote a post titled “Migraine’s Secret Sauce” and concluded by complaining about how many people on social media were calling themselves “content creators”.  As I saw it, the world was already full of content, AI could make content, no one had time to read so much content, and what we really needed was something other than more content to help us heal and be happy…  At the very end of the post, I declared that I did NOT want to be a content creator, and I would aim instead to be a kindness creator, or a community creator, or some other word that started with the “ck” sound.

Since then, my soap-box has developed a wobble…

Recently, I realized words can have two meanings.  “Invalid”, for example, can mean a “sick person” or imply that something is “null and void” – one interpretation feels like an affirmation of my life with chronic migraine, the other sounds like an insult.

Not long after, it occurred to me – the word “content” ALSO has two meanings.

There is the content I originally wrote about: all the material that fills something up, the text, images, and ideas… just as a box can be filled up with contents, so too a blog is filled with content.

BUT the other meaning of the word content, is to be at peace, to be restful, comfortable – satisfied.

AH NOW – that changes everything!

If I was to be a “content creator” of the second sort, well then, I would be someone who was aiding readers find ways to be more at ease within their environment… and within themselves… my blogposts would become a conduit to potential rest and relaxation…

I believe my migraine slipped from occasional to chronic (almost constant) as a result of my nervous system shifting from rest-and-digest (where it ought to be most of the time) and sliding instead into fight-and-flight mode (which is designed to be used only for short bursts in an emergency).

Want to guess which version of my vagus nerve “comfortable-content” would reside in?

Rest-and-digest-repair-restore… also known as the realm of relaxation!

When I was younger, I used to imagine that it was a sign of personal integrity to take a stand, to be bold and brave and defend your position no matter what… these days I see this sort of behavior as being closer to stubbornness than superiority.  The more we read, the more we learn, the more we realize we don’t know everything… can’t know everything… and the more it seems inevitable that we will change our minds… and in some circumstances, it is a sign of open-minded growth that we SHOULD change our minds.

That’s not to say I want to be a weathervane, and spin willy-nilly this-way-that with all the prevailing trends, fads and fashions… but I am big enough to stand corrected.

I was wrong to not want to be a content creator – because instead of a (material-)content creator I DREAM of being a (comfort-)content creator… generating comfort for me and for you!

Take care taking care, comfortably, Linda x

Love this! And yes, our English vocab is so interesting, we often don’t think too deeply about the words we use. I’ve never wanted to describe myself as a ‘content creator’ but in the context of helping others “feel good” maybe I’d reconsider that. Regardless, we’re ALL creating every day, aren’t we? Hugs your way. xx

Hugs gratefully received, and YES, I feel like a life lived creatively is part of our purpose – and if we can help some others a long the way – all the better! Linda xx

Me too! 😁 But since the writing isn’t going anywhere anymore, I have to be content for my content to be other content. I think I’m going to start posting old scanned pictures with amusing captions …

Oh I just found you – I missed your comment somehow! I think if you’re content with your content and whatever contentment that looks like, your content is contentable… (don’t try to make sense of it – I’m just being silly).

I have a soft spot for pictures with gags that came out of being too ill to get my head in gear for much more than memes and magazines – go for it!

I love this idea and the spin on the word content and it suites your work perfectly! I really love that you mentioned being open to changing your mind too! I really spoke to me because I can be pretty stubborn! I’m usually stuck in my ways, but recently I’ve been learning to open up myself up to different ideas and views. My views on mental illness particularly has changed. I was strongly against going to therapy and taking psychiatric medication. I soon started growing tired of my depression symptoms and they stated to really effect my relationships. I knew I just could not continue living the way I was. I had to do something, so I decided to try therapy. That decision has improved my life. I’m not going to lie. I’m Im still very stubborn! Old habits die hard, but I’m learning to be more flexible.

YAY YOU! I’m Queen Stubborn, so I know how hard it is to change your ways – but I think of it more as a “pivot” rather than a reversal or big thing these days… bend and sway… that’s what a tree does, that’s what we should do; doesn’t mean we’re not still grounded – just more flexible! L xx

I love that idea! That’s true! You have to start small! I’m the type to want to make big changes and expect for them to happen over night! lol. For instance, I would love to get more in shape. I exercised here and there, and when I started exercising a little I was hoping to see results fast, like in a week fast! I’ve learned that leads to disappointment and quitting. Patience is key.

Oh gosh – I’m with you on the fitness thing – I want to lose weight, and I stopped stepping on the scales when I couldn’t see any dramatic changes (as if eating granola for a week was going to reverse 3 years of bed-bound-weight-gain!!)

I love your interpretation of content creator, Linda! May we all be content creators in this way!

I also totally understand your point about there being so much content, and I do feel like we’re drowning in it. The sad thing is that long-form journalism, which is my specialty, can’t compete with content creation. I find myself intentionally dumbing down content to get readers in my professional writing. It’s either that, or pass the baton to someone younger and become unemployed. So I do the math and I give in to the pull of click bait production.

It’s frustrating isn’t it! I’m writing my PhD (almost done!) so the level of rigour required is non negotiable in terms of style, punctuation, sourcing, referencing, (truth), and then I read the news and I too am pulled in by clickable headings.

I keep experimenting here on the blog, trying to find a balance between education and entertainment, but see my role as sharing information much more keenly than shaking bells and whistles… it probably makes me invisible in some ways, but I believe knowledge is power and readers can handle a bit of effort… for now.

Sigh – hope you find the right balance too. Thanks for visiting, it means a lot to me, Linda xx

yeah….. that’s harder… I still don’t get the whole thing… and I really hate the idea of being influenced to do anything – it’s perilously close to being bossed / commanded / pushy-persuaded…

I was at a high school careers expo for my daughters (aged 16 and nearly 18) and made the mistake of mumbling something about influencers not being a real job only to have a life coach behind me tell me how wrong I was! Live and learn I guess! 🤣🤣🤣

      Have a great week(end)

Content. “contenu” vs “contenant” (Contained vs container)

If I understand today’s vocabulary a content is an influence, since influencers produce content… What about being “content”. (Same in French…)

Now from content to delirium, there isn’t much distance is there?

Anyway, thanks for letting me “délirer”.

    Brian

PS. For migraine, have you tried “Vydura”? (It costs an arm and a leg, but so far, it seems to have “contained” my migraine…)

    Cheers
