Are you a super-hotty or a cool kid?

In anecdotal evidence, Iโ€™m discovering that migraineurs tend to be either โ€˜hotโ€™ or โ€˜coolโ€™ people.

Those of us who are ‘hotties’, like to take our caffeine hit in the form of a cup of coffee.ย  When we take a shower to relax tired muscles, it needs to be nice and warm.ย  When we need migraine relief, we turn to heat packs.

Cool kids‘, on the other hand, tend to enjoy caffeinated soda, use ice-packs or cold compresses to get relief from their pain, and potentially prefer colder showers.

I know that for me, placing anything cold on my face feels terrible. Even placing a cold, wet cloth on my eyes is enough to give me an ice-cream headache on-top-of my migraine; ugh.ย  I can get my head around a can of soda, and have, occasionally, been known to indulge.ย  As for a cold shower โ€“ no way โ€“ I canโ€™t think of anything less relaxing.

That said, I seem to be in the minority.  Hereโ€™s a website that I found that discusses the history of โ€˜cold therapyโ€™ for migraines. Itโ€™s interesting to know itโ€™s a strategy thatโ€™s been around for a whileโ€ฆ but itโ€™s a tad horrific that one method involved โ€˜intranasal reliefโ€™ where cold fluids are pumped into your nose via tubing:

Heat vs. Ice for Migraine: What Works Best? – Healthgrades

The science behind cold therapy is that it causes blood vessels to contract and potentially decrease inflammation, as well as slowing down your metabolism, and possibly inhibiting the way our nerves conduct pain signals.ย  Heat therapy, in theory, is worse, because it dilates the blood vessels, potentially causing them to expand and become squashed against the skull, increasing the chance pain signals might be sent. Accordingly, thereโ€™s not a lot of research into heat therapyโ€ฆ sorry fellow hotties.

Whatโ€™s also interesting, is that there is a lot of talk on-line about โ€˜mixing it upโ€™.ย  In other words, if you’re a hottie you should take a cold shower, or, at the same time as using your heat pack for your neck, place cold washcloths on your wrists.ย  Conversely, if youโ€™re a cool kid, then popping a heat pack into the blankets at the same time as youโ€™re using your icy-beanie-thingy, will supposedly help.

The theory is that you mess with your mind.ย  Your migraine-brain receives two sets of conflicting pieces of advice, and not sure which one to listen to, it snaps out of whatever stupor itโ€™s in.ย  I confess Iโ€™m not as skeptical as I probably should be.ย  The ubiquitous meme that keeps going around suggests you should “put your feet and hands in hot water, and a bag of frozen peas on your neck”:

this is a picture of a lady with her hands and feet in a sink of warm water and a bag of frozen peas on her neck, which is said to be a home remedy for curing migraines.

Not gonna lie, this photo gives me the heebie-jeebiesโ€ฆ surely you could just use a tub-bucket in the loungeroom instead of taking your peas next to an open toilet and sitting on the benchโ€ฆ and I know it’s being a bit pedantic, but the bag looks like it has potato-puffs or corn in it, not peas…

Anyway – back to helping you reduce your chronic pain – curious to know if any of you have been able to make being a โ€˜cool hottieโ€™ work as pain relief?

Regards and take care, Linda x

Iโ€™m an outlier, I prefer my caffeine hot ๐Ÿฅต in the morning and then I can switch to cold ๐Ÿฅถ caffeinated beverages! I prefer warm showers but will hit the cold to wake me up and shampoo my hair. I also prefer icing my pain. Unless itโ€™s a severe migraine. I then place a hot rice bag on my head and an ice pack on the back of my neck.
    So, there you go. Iโ€™m a weirdo but Iโ€™m cute ๐Ÿฅฐ ๐Ÿ˜‚

I love it!! You’re super quirky with your mixed-bag of treatments, and you own it! It just goes to show that ‘whatever works’ is key, and the best way to figure that out is to experiment. Linda xox

I don’t suffer from migraines, but do have other forms of chronic pain. I’ve never ever even tried ice packs and am definitely a hottie where it comes to my caffeine and shower preferences. I can’t imagine cold being at all relaxing or pain-relieving.

I’m with you; I like to ‘melt’ my pain away. Being cold just puts me in ‘freeze’ mode which creates another layer of stress in my system. Hope your pain is not too bad over the weekend. Best wishes Astrid, and thanks so much for sharing! Linda xox

I always went for something cool on my forehead while I laid in a dark quiet room. My brother would go for a warm bath followed by going to bed in a quiet dark room.

Heat for me, always!! Works better than the cold… ๐ŸŒž I have tried this method while sitting in the tub and yes, it felt weird but didn’t help with the pain…

Yeah, I think ‘mess with your mind’ doesn’t always mean ‘get well soon’…!! (hope you’re feeling OK). ๐Ÿ’•

I am with you… a hot shower on the pain in my head eases it a bit.โ€‚But many years ago, we took a spa vacation and the herbalist told me to alternate cold and hot.โ€‚I have tried this if I wake up with one… splash hot water then cold water on my face and forehead and sometimes it works.โ€‚I can’t do cold showers and ice on the head hurts but it probably works for some people.โ€‚๐Ÿฅฐ

Ok, interesting, so we’re really similar. I have also tried the alternating hot and cold showers, but I really don’t like the cold, it makes everything tense up and seems to send the wrong message to my brain – “trouble and danger” not “rest and reax”. Amazing how we can all share a similar diagnosis but have such different symptoms and responses – headaches are so glitchy! xox
