My migraine’s marshmallow snowman

Published by

OK, so that’s a heading I wasn’t expecting to write anytime soon… but… I have been giving my squishy-stress-snowman a workout the last few days, and I thought he deserved a post of his own.

In Australia, there has been a massive craze of things called “fidget spinners” and “stress toys”. I don’t know what it says about our society that children aged anywhere from 5 to 18 were considered so twitchy and stressed that such an enormous category of gifts was devised (and repeatedly sold out). Everyone who was anyone on the school playground had doo-dads that spun, or plastic-poppers-that-popped, or creatures of all shapes and sizes that were made of squeezy foam. My migraine’s Mr Marshmallow Snowman (Mr Mallow for short) is of the latter category:

a snowman shaped stress ball, used to reduce stress.

I’m not ashamed to say it, but this little fellow was a gift from my sister to one of my daughters for last Christmas that ‘accidentally’ got lost on my desk. Mr Mallow is now a permanent resident of my workspace, and spends so much time being ‘hugged’ that his head is half-way to falling off (oops).

Does he work? You bet. There is something very soothing spinning his body this-way-that and giving him a squeeze. I do it mainly when I’m proof reading something I’m writing for university studies, but also when I’m reading other people’s blogs. Does that mean that I find blog-reading stressful? I don’t think so, it’s more that there’s a narrowing of attention that takes place. Aside from the slow decline of Mr Mallow’s appearance and questionable longevity, I can’t see any downsides.

I think the habit that I’ve formed (for better or worse) is similar to the people I used to work with who were pen-spinners, pen-clickers, knee-bouncers, foot-flickers, or hair-twisters… there’s something self-soothing in a repeated action. (I think it’s why I like EFT tapping too).

What about you? Do YOU have a stress-reduction technique that involves body-bounces, fidget-gidget-gadgets, marshmallows or snowmen? I’d love to hear!

Take care taking care, Linda x

I’m thankful for these fidget toys. I use them daily to calm down especially when I’m overstimulated with the noise and the singing biddies! I need a new squishy. 💜💜

I’ll keep my eye out for a rudolf at my end – then we can match!😉

Great post, Linda… I love the snowman marshmallow! I never got into the “fidget spinners”.
I find sometimes my leg going up and down but mostly I’ve gotten into the tapping as well.
I tap my chest, right in the middle and I catch myself doing it too. It is very soothing!

While I was working at the public library here, Linda, folks who held various lectures seemed to like handing out many various tension-reducing gadgets to patrons. Yes, one or two did make their way to my desk after I took photographs of the event.

I was never a big fan of what I always assumed to be ready-for-the-bin-plastic-garbage… but now… goes to show that as we change so do our needs! (PS – I like the label “tension-reduction” more than “stress-toy” – it’s more accurate – thanks!) xx

I suspect you’ll be on the lookout for a replacement snowman ⛄️
As for me, I’ve found myself holding/playing with pens as I read

Ah…. a pen-player… I do my fair share of that too… it’s probably inevitable when you’re at your desk!
(and yes, I’ve already put a new squishie onto my Christmas wish list for Santa…!)
(Although, I’ll be sad to see Mr Mallow go…)

Ohhh – a pen-clicker… that can get annoying if it goes on for too long… I remember I used to work with a guy who did it a LOT and it used to drive the rest of us mad!!
Still… the new, more Zen-me is not one to judge… so if it still works for you – click away! ❤️

I have squeezy balls. I use them all the time as a passenger or while driving a car

(🤣) … that’s me trying not to laugh … I can’t imagine driving my car with Mr Mallow – it wouldn’t end well … giving him a squeeze when I’m a passenger as my daughter is learning to drive on the other hand, that I can imagine!! xx

Haha, yeah, sometimes while sitting in the depths of traffic, I just have to hold it and squeeze.

And I remember those days of teaching my boys to drive. I wish I would have had squeezy balls back then. Good luck to you.

        Hugs
