I’m a “true nerd” – how about you?

I’m a bit of a sucker for online tests, so when I came across one on The Spectacled Bean‘s blog, I had to have a go.

[And if that name seems familiar – yes, I followed their lead once before on the “where should I live” personality test that I blogged about over here.]

This time, the aim is to find out if you’re a nerd (brainy), jock (sporty), preppy (I guess neat and sophisticated?), or a goth (let’s go for anarchy-arty??).

Here’s the grid of where you can land after you complete 22 questions:

image of a grid of answers your personality could be

I’m so old and out of touch I have no idea what a Baller or LARP is, but I don’t need to worry, because apparently, I am all nerd… but very close to also being a Normie-normal-(neutral)-person:

Before doing the test, I would have said I was nerdy-gothic… but in this test, that would make me a LARP – which turns out to be a Live Action Role Player (the sort of person who loves getting dressed up and play-acting scenes from favorite movies or video games) and LARP I am NOT. Not because there’s anything wrong with it, just because getting dressed some days is hard enough with migraine pain. The idea of fancy-dress and play-acting is exhausting to me. [Although I guess I came close in the photo of me as a “crippled pirate mother” – here.]

And because I can’t leave any stone unturned, a “baller’ (or “balla”) is apparently slang for a super-successful person who’s famous (or may soon be) because of their relentless ambition and go-getter-attitude. Again, not me. Driven (sometimes surely), but not at all costs. I’m too chill for that these days, or at least, I’m trying to be.

So, what does it mean to be a true nerd?

According to the site: “True Nerds are highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about particular academic or technical subjects. Nerds are sometimes seen as being more interested in academics, technology, or other ‘nerdy’ pursuits than in popular culture or mainstream social activities. Nerds often spend a lot of time and energy pursuing their interests, to the point where others can regard them as a bit obsessed with their hobbies.”

Ummm… well… that DOES sound a lot like the PhD’ing / migraine-blogging / indoors with a book or bust version of me.

OK. So I am a true nerd and I’ll own it. At least by being close to the Normie line I’m not a SUPER-nerd!

Anyway – I’ve been a bit mean and deliberately haven’t given you the link to the website (sorry) so that you can try it yourself.

Just remember that by clicking on the link, you are leaving the safety of my well-meaning site, and I can NOT guarantee that your computer won’t become hideously infected by a virtual virus OR your credit card details won’t be stolen in the night OR your soul will be crushed when you find out you’re not as gothic as you imagined… (I wrote a whole series of free Gothic stories (here) for goodness sake!) so click the button at your own risk:

Jock-Nerd/Prep-Goth Test

If you do have a go, let me know whether the results were “true-you” or came as a surprise. But don’t stress too much – 22 questions doesn’t seem like enough to understand our multi-faceted selves… surely!?!

Take care taking care,

Linda xx

PS – if you’re wondering what this has to do with chronic pain management – the answer is – not a lot… and yet… if you can start to understand yourself better, what makes you tick, what makes you YOU, then you can start to tailor your healing to suit. Me – I treat the collection of technical details as a hobby – so that has been a big part of my healing journey: research (and writing about that research to share with you). For you – it might turn out that dressing up as a crippled pirate mother was the therapy you needed all along – enjoy!! (and send me the snaps!! xx)

If you’d asked me ahead of time I would’ve said I was 0% Goth. I’ve never painted a single light bulb black in my life!

Wow – whereas I did the whole dyed black hair and kohl black eye thing for several years (to my parents bemusement/distress) – perhaps you’re a more authentic (historic) goth, less pantomime, more hard core!! 😂

I didn’t get a chance to ask, but it’s day surgery! My darlin’ Doug is willing to take me home after the surgery and look after me. I know that I will need a sling for 4 to 6 weeks. I will keep you informed.

he he – it’s true – we are who we are – regardless of whatever “label” they want to assign – in terms of health, I’ve had a few good days, but woke up again feeling iffy this morning… but I’m trying to keep my spirits up and not fall into the fear-pain-cycle that I think I succumbed to recently – it’s a normal instinct, but catastrophizing the situation just makes it feel so much worse… slow and steady, lots of fluids, lots of breaks, and lots of “I am safe” positive affirmations to myself throughout the day seem to be helping! thank you for asking lovely, hope you’re ok too, Lxox

I may have mentioned that the current focus of my OA and fibromyalgia pain is my right (dominant) shoulder. It makes life kind of yukky, to be honest, and there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of choice about how to deal with it. Yesterday, I had a virtual appointment with a shoulder surgeon, who repeated what everyone else has said. When it gets to be bone-on-bone like mine is, one either lives with the pain or has the shoulder replaced. A replacement should last 15 to 20 years, and the surgery has a 95 percent success rate. I’m nearly 80, so it’s unlikely that I’ll outlive it, and I do like the odds. Having had success with both knee replacements, the choice seems clear to me. This is one pain I will be able to eliminate. Aren’t you glad you expressed an interest in my health!

I am! I think that it is very validating to have options – my hip is not quite bone on bone, and I have been able to reduce the need for a replacement (for now) by watching my posture and recalibrating my pain signals… but once it is a scrape-scrape pain, I don’t know how you could ignore it. What is the recovery time like (I hear it is getting better and better all the time for these sorts of ops – my dad who is nearly 80 was up and about (slowly) after his hip replacement much faster than I expected). xx
