What “Era” are you in?

Taylor Swift, love her or not, is pretty cool.  When I was growing up, Madonna might have been an equivalent performer; an incredibly famous singer-songwriter and image-chameleon.  Each time you think you have them “pegged” to a particular song-style, or appearance, they change.  They bring out one album that becomes familiar, and then, they bring out another album which feels like it’s gone off on a tangent, then another that seems like an about face to the two prior ones.

As artists, they keep reinventing themselves.  They never get old… or at least their music doesn’t… no one has discovered the Elixir of Eternal Youth (yet).

Because I “get” Madonna more than Taylor Swift, (I was there, watching her shape-shift), here’s an image I found of her transforming herself over time:

My favorite look was from “Nothing Really Matters” (2009) when she dressed-up as a pseudo-Japanese-geisha. The images would spark an epic debate about cultural-misappropriation these days (and rightly so), but back then I was just enamored by her straight hair and fabulous headpiece!

Spin back to today. What I really like about Taylor Swift (from what I can tell from casual observation) is that she both recognizes and celebrates her changing personality by labelling them “Eras”.  She’s been “Fearless” and “Enchanted” and “Wonderstruck” a “Tortured Poet” and “ME!” (based on her song titles and perfume range).

There’s something especially endearing that someone so young uses a term that typically refers to decades-long periods of time… eons even.   For Taylor Swift, an Era can be as short as the span of a year in which an album was completed.

One of the other things I like about Taylor Swift is her ability to embrace her flaws – that’s not to say she leans into them, or resigns herself to them – only that she is aware of them, learns from them, and seems to move on… at least that’s what her lyrics suggest.

She doesn’t seem to sell “perfect”; her tribe loves her because she appears authentic, vulnerable, honest.  Not every Era is going to be a success, and that’s OK… that’s what it is to be human… to keep going and keep growing…

When I look back over my life, I see a few “Eras” of my own.

When I was young I was a “good-girl” people-pleaser. In my late teens I went through a stage where I rebelled (as much as a people-pleaser can) and dressed in what I would call “goth-lite”.  As a young professional in the workplace I tried to be “a creative” “go getter” (luckily, architects tend to have all-black wardrobes, so I was already set up!).  As a wife and mother, I was a selfless “care-giver” (who added a bit more color to my cupboard (but not much)), and as a chronic migraine person I became an “invalid” (who lived in pajamas or oversized slouchy t-shirts).

In the same way that Madonna was Madonna was not-Madonna over the years… here are some random photos I found of me being me, being a different version of me, but still me, over the decades (starting with an image of me with what I refer to as “pug-puppy-face“!!):

a long row of small pictures of the author over time

More recently, as I started healing myself through mindfulness, I have shifted again, into a “self-healer”… perhaps even a “helper” as I blog about my journey to encourage others.  In my podcast interview with Roi Shternin (here) I spoke of myself as shifting from thinking of myself as a “healthcare LOSER” to a “healthcare LEARNER” who was inspired by “healthcare LEADERS”.

Three potential Eras lined up in a row!

The point is – our lives aren’t static.  Who we are today is not necessarily who we have to be tomorrow.  We might feel like the product of our upbringing, and in many ways, we are – but we still have the potential to change, to learn, to grow, to alter our course, to alter who we are, to reinvent ourselves into something altogether new… even potentially someone unrecognizable!

So… what Era are you in today – and what Era do you aspire to be in next?

Equally importantly – what are you doing to make it happen – because I know you can!

Take care taking care, Linda xx

PS – Following on from my note about the Roi interview above, I’m excited to share that I was recently interviewed again – this time by Violet Li, Tai Chi Master, on how mindfulness helped me reduce my migraine pain. Our discussion was taped (you can watch it here) or read the associated article and share some blog love with Violet over on her site: Managing Migraine with Tai Chi – Violet Li Tai Chi

I believe I’m in my “Learning How to Shine” era! I can definitely relate to being in a self-healing era (pretty sure there’s an overlap)

As we age, were really appreciate the idea of re-inventing ourselves. Our bodies might age, but our minds and how we present ourselves can still be youthful, energetic and fun. LOL, I didn’t mean wearing mini-skirts, but I’ve seen some ladies in their 80s who can pull this off.

He he – I have been known to wear a short skirt over leggings every now and then, but it sure doesn’t look like it used to! But I agree – why not experiment with a new version of us? xx

What a great post! You just pointed to our greatest superpower – our ability to reinvent ourselves. We all do it multiple times throughout our lifespans – usually a result of aging or health or role changes, things we don’t necessarily have control over. But … but, we can choose to reinvent ourselves whenever we want to, even overnight! That’s huge (and a load of responsibility). I love how you’ve shifted “from thinking of myself as a “healthcare LOSER” to a “healthcare LEARNER” who was inspired by “healthcare LEADERS”.” You are using your superpower!

Yay us!! I think it’s pretty cool (and exhausting) that we can reinvent ourselves – just not too often, or we’ll confuse the neighbors!! 🤣

I always liked Madonna, although it was in secret because I grew up in a conservative Christian environment that discouraged secular music. I love the idea of eras; I have reinvented myself several times over my life and always felt a bit like a failure. Thinking about each “new me” as a new era is freeing.

Oh! I’m sorry that you have ever felt like a failure – please don’t – your blog exudes a gentle warmth, and reveals a patient and creative soul who brings a lot of positivity to life! (and that’s me as a stranger – I’m sure those who know you can add a lot more compliments to the list!!)

Sending lots of digital love your way, Linda xox

PS – Madonna really WAS a risky listen back in the days (I had a friend whose church told them they would go to hell if they listened to her music) – my parents didn’t stop us listening, but my mother was a bit appalled that anyone would go out in public with their bra visible!

I loved iconic Madonna back in the day. Don’t know much about Taylor Swift, but I like the term “Eras.” I’m in my loner Era, because the world today is in such a terrible place. Great YouTube discussion with Tai Chi Master, Violet Li! 🤗

Oh thank you for listening to Violet and I! And yes; I can relate to the “loner era”, I feel a bit the same – interacting with the world is a bit exhausting and depressing, whereas home and hearth is restorative… I think I would call mine the “quiet era” as I try to find moments of stillness whilst I still have teenage daughters to mother… I can’t go into full hermit mode… yet! Ugh – I’m sorry this is your journey – 😔💜 – I don’t think “sorry” is something I have ever heard a doctor say… other than the lady who said “I’m sorry there is nothing more I can do for you, you need to learn to live with your pain” and then told me I had 2 minutes to stop crying and pull myself together as she had more patients to see… sigh.

The fun idea about eras is you can swap them out if they don’t align with where you want to be. I’m mostly in my “quiet era” but I don’t mind a bit of dance music every now and then to put me in a “move your body before it stops working era”!! L 🙂

I’ve been scanning old pictures and negatives for the last few months so I’ve gotten reintroduced to a bunch of old eras of myself and my wife. With me the main change is what kind of glasses I’m wearing, and who remembers when they got new glasses? So I kind of have to go by my wife’s hairstyle and/or which pets are in the background to figure out what year it was when the pictures aren’t dated … 😁

Love that your wife’s hairdo is your equivalent of carbon-dating! 🤣 My hair only falls into two broad categories: BG and AG (Before going Gray and After Gray) – the length and styles were pretty consistent for decades; long for the first 25 years / short for the next 25…! Enjoy the trip down memory lane and say hi to your wife for me! 🙂

😅Goodluck with that! I’ll have to do some more googling, all I can remember of her was the boofy hair and big shoulder pads (but that was all of us in the 80s!) – great to think she’s been another ever-evolving performer; very cool!

what a great article Linda! I enjoyed reading this.

it’s amazing how much life we have all led. even though there’s that sentiment about so much happening in 10 years – extrapolate that to 20 or even with you as an example: 30 😉😉

i always tell people that their potential, from their present point, is UNLIMITED. and when we look back at how far we’ve come that should be the proof. can’t wait to see what your next era will be!

and just as an aside, i’ll never forget the first video I saw of Madonna. even then, when I was young, i had an intrinsic sense that this person was notable

i still listen to this song from time to time. it reminds me of my “barely self-aware era” 😀 Mike

OMG 😅 I was there too during that “low-self-awareness” era – AND I was wearing similar hair and makeup to Madonna in the video! I’ll have to spend a bit more time going through some old photos – but all I remember was teasing my hair to the verge of killing it, so that it would stand a few inches off my head!

Here’s cheers to all of us having “unlimited” potential moving forward – I love that for us!!

A nice exploration of self, Linda. While I’m not necessarily a Swiftie or a Madonna fan, I can relate to what you’re writing about here.

Looking back, I can see I’ve gone through various eras, some for the better and some for the worse, but there’s been growth along the way. My era now is healing, learning from past mistakes and making adjustments for the future.

    Cheers! 🙂

We sound similar – I think of myself as being in a “gentle” era – less rush, more growth… slow and steady does it. “There is a season for everything” as the saying goes. Here’s for our future eras – may they be grand (in a gently does it way!) L xx
