The single song of the universe

Iโ€™ve always been a huge fan of rebus puzzles โ€“ those graphic word games where you have to figure out a phrase based on the way that the text and pictures are arranged.

Examples include the word ‘close’ written twice next to the word ‘comfort’ written four times (2 close 4 comfort = too close for comfort).

Here’s one I made on Powerpoint – can you guess what it means?:

a picture of the letters E and Z laid on top of a page full of toy eyeballs

The answer is: “Easy (E-Z) on the eyes”… which the image isn’t (sorry).

This sort of word-play is how I came up with the idea of being (dis)abled for a past post: I am simultaneously able-bodied enough to do many things, but also an invalid due to my chronic migraine, and therefore unable to perform at my peakโ€ฆ and sometimes unable to perform at all.

When I imagine a phrase for myself as a sick-blogger, I often think of myself as a โ€œslow coachโ€ โ€“ it is a fun way of suggesting Iโ€™m something of a migraine mentorโ€ฆ just not a particularly energized one!

[Other ‘games’ can get darker thoughโ€ฆ take โ€œinvalidโ€ โ€“ I meant it above in terms of being โ€œa sick personโ€, but it can also mean in-valid: โ€œillegalโ€, โ€œworthlessโ€ or โ€œnull and voidโ€.]

Perhaps because Iโ€™ve always played similar games over the years, I spot quirks within words at random times.  Not long ago, for example, I wrote about “arm sand” (which was actually a typo for “arms and”). About the same time, I was on the train going into university, and we pulled up at Town Hall Station.  On the back of all the bench chairs, and the walls behind them, were big signs to help you orient yourself on your journey: โ€œTown Hallโ€ was repeated over and over.  For some reason it suddenly occurred to me, that if the two capital letters were removed, all these signs would say โ€œown allโ€… โ€œown allโ€โ€ฆ โ€œown allโ€…

I donโ€™t know what the revelation says about me, my mindset in that moment, or my deeper opinions…

The point is, words are wonderful.

Thatโ€™s why, when someone else points out a clever way with words, I am always so impressed (and a little bit jealous that I didnโ€™t spot it myself!)  An example that blew me away, happened a while ago when I saw something in passing.  At the time, I remember thinking โ€œoh wow โ€“ that is fantastic!โ€ but almost immediately after, something called my attention away and the breath-stealing moment was over.  (So much for my mindfulness practice!)  It was only when I was thinking about what to write about here, that I suddenly remembered the power of the words, but sadly, canโ€™t give an attribution to the original author.

What they had written was so simple and yet so profound (at least to me), and went something like this:

Universe = uni-verse = single song

Mindfulness often reiterates that we should pay attention to ourselves in the present moment.  But, as I have written about before, if you ONLY ever focus on yourself in YOUR moment, you risk practicing a form of Mindfulness that becomes โ€œMine-fulnessโ€.  Your self-awareness becomes self-centered and possibly selfish.

The original version of mindfulness was embedded in 2,500 years of traditional wisdom, spirituality and morality.  It aims to help you increase your relationship with yourself, BUT ALSO your relationship to everything else.

In a past post about the book โ€œThe Healing Art of Tai Chi,โ€ there was an image in which our mind is linked to an infinite mind, our thoughts with eternal thoughts, our personal energy with a more cosmic energy, and our own body united to a universal body.

It was a nice reminder that โ€œno man is an islandโ€ (from John Donne in the 1600s), or if you prefer, โ€œThe world globes itself in a drop of dewโ€ (from Ralph Waldo Emerson in the 1800s (maybe)).

We are all sisters and brothers, in a way, all members and custodians of Mother Earth, all recipients of, and contributors to, the events that are unfolding around us.  In a similar way that Tao, or The Way, suggests that the path, the destination, and the traveler are all one and the same, all our individual voices, and unique stories, combine to create a single-song of the uni-verse.

Next time youโ€™re feeling lonely โ€“ remember this post โ€“ remember that you are made of star dust and you are never alone.

Take care taking care of yourself and others,

Linda xox

I like how this post combines fun with words with deep, intriguing ideas. After reading, I thought of the word harmony. (Though I don’t want to play with that word too much.) I just know I can’t sing harmony all by myself, no matter how introverted I want to be. Love the โ€œslow coachโ€… migraine mentorโ€ฆ just not a particularly energized one! My husband is a high energy, self-proclaimed workaholic in spite of retirement, while I’m embracing my naturally slower pace and listening to my body. It takes all kinds of people to make the universe sing.

It really does take all sorts to make a harmonious song!! And I suspect that you and your husband’s combined energies is what makes its own form of harmony (my hubby and I are yin-yang in SO many ways – and I think it’s why we work together so well as a duo!!)

Really fun! I did guess the EZ on the eyes! I like all kinds of word games, and do notice how they look or sound in different ways. I should start writing them down when I notice, because I will forget the funny idea. ๐Ÿ™‚

Absolutely loved this post Linda! Playing with words is one of my favorite things to do, and I completely align with the concept of Uni-verse. What a beautiful way in which to frame the wholeness of creation, as one big song. Amazing.

Thank you! Word-play is such a joy, and yes, it really is an amazing idea – so nice to imagine all our voices in unison!

We are all made in the image of God–Imago Dei–that gives us a singular perspective about our value and worth. We were each special enough to be created, magnificent enough to be made by the God who loves us, even if we ignore Him. Words are wonderful conveyors of beauty, truth, wisdom, and grace. They can build up–which we need to choose; they can also tear down, which seems to be more the bent of culture everywhere today. Thanks for “puzzling” out the commonality in us all. I love how you think!

I’ve been a bit down of late – the news all seems sad at the moment – but I wonder if that’s not just “how they sell papers” as my Dad used to say when I was younger – there’s still plenty of good news stories out there, they just don’t get the same traction – so I’m going to try to point out as much of the good stuff as I can and remind us all that the world is really beautiful – you see it too – I think that’s why we get on so well!!

Lulu: “Our Dada loves word games too! He has a few that he plays just about every day on his phone, and a few more that he plays when he has time. Which doesn’t seem to be very often lately …”

Oh, I’m a fan of those puzzles as well, Linda. Great little brain teasers.

I really enjoyed this post. I’m a believer in a common thread in the universe, something that connects us all on a quantum level. In physics, it’s determined that electricity never goes away, it simply transfers from one point to another. Since we humans run on electricity, I think that’s what connects us. Electrical impulses inside us, all around us.

Uni-verse makes sense to me. Thanks for sharing this. ๐Ÿ™‚

“Energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transferred” is a saying that has stayed with me since high school – I like to think that this is true of our personal energy too – like you, I like to think of us all connected by that energy, always and forever. L xx

I got a giggle when a young girl wrote that a female singer was “such a pre-maddona”.

I returned a contract to a staff member because there was a mix up. My sticky no read “Please resign”.

Before I knew what was happening there was an urgent knock on my office door.

I explained she wasn’t dismissed from her job. She just needed to sign a second copy of her contract.

๐Ÿ˜‚oh my goodness – the feelings she must have been feeling!!! I think I would have cried – not just at the thought I was being let go, but that it was happening via a post-it-note! Glad you sorted it out. Such a funny anecdote!
