Messing with my mind

Published by

on

My email server is flooded with ads, generally spammy ads for things I don’t need and didn’t ask for… nothing new there. What has changed, however, is that they are now almost exclusively illustrated with AI art.

Instead of a photograph of real people celebrating their new purchase or someone looking bereft because they are yet to indulge in some form of mindless consumerism, it’s now all AI imagery that sometimes does, and often does NOT, make sense.

At the risk of embarrassing a brand (shame is never my game) – here’s a recent ad that was used to promote a home insurance company (company name deleted):

a map of Australia which is mislabeled

Now, I don’t expect my overseas friends to know which states go where, but I will let you know we only have 6 states and 2 territories in Australia, so the map has way too many colorful zones. Moreover, you might have noticed that there is often two of the same names in different locations (I live in New South Wales which is actually positioned in about the same spot as the yellow “Queensland” which is missing an ‘e’ for good measure.) Oh, and Idaho and Iowa are NOT states or territories in Australia… doh!

OK, so that’s not great, and it’s pretty unreassuringly grim for the business that is supposed to be selling its expertise on the market – but aside from messing with my mind, is there any real harm in it?

Unequivocally, I say YES.

Aside from being ridiculously lazy, it’s reinforcing the post truth world we find ourselves in these days – it sows confusion, reduces clarity, fills the void with trash, and diminishes the value of real knowledge and hard-earnt wisdom.

Imagine if you relied on this map as someone who was unfamiliar with Australia – it’s worse than just ‘silly’, it’s dangerous.

Imagine also, if the business who was so relaxed with Australian state names was as laid back with the truth when it came to keeping track of your investment deposits or your insurance claims.

UGH.

When a business pumps pollution into a clean river, it risks polluting the whole river. Shame on the polluter. Shame too on the regulators who didn’t punish the polluter. Shame too, I suppose, on all of us who saw it happening and didn’t turn the tap off while we still could.

But what happens when it’s not a single polluter but a deluge of sh!t coming our way…?

SIGH.

I could probably leave it there and just be irritable, except another ad came through about the same time – this time it sent a shiver down my spine. Again, it did not do the (health insurance comparison) company any favors. Whilst I suspect it intended to lean into the notion of “I have a secret to tell you”, the AI illustrator got it SO wrong – but why didn’t a human pick up on the negative nuance of the image…? Or is it just me that is mortified by the picture on the left and what appears (to me) to be the wide-eyed fear of the patient:

shows an ad in which a nurse or doctor is putting her finger on a patient's lips to hush them

And don’t even get me started on this one and whatever-the-witchetty-grub-tik-tok-heck is inside her mouth… yuk:

shows a lady whose face is melting and something strange in her mouth as it recommends you make changes to avoid sleep apnea

Anyway – I’m trying to channel nothing but positivity this year to keep my healing journey on track – so here’s one last image, a snapshot of my daughter’s painting she made in preschool when she would have been about 3 years old – it’s a messy blob that’s helpfully titled “a watermelon” – and it suggests that appearances can be deceptive and the perception of beauty is in the eye of the beholder… and that toddlers are as skilled as media execs when it comes to messing with my mind!

picture is of a black and green mess with a teacher's handwritten note: "a watermelon" beside it.

One of the things that I’m appreciating about your daughter’s painting of a watermelon is that it got me thinking what if the painting’s blue is the water part of watermelon and what if the melon (in watermelon) could be referring to someone’s head, and the dark scribbling and messiness could be a reflection of someone’s mind (or head) and/or how someone is thinking, and maybe when she heard the word painting, what if she very much noticed or heard the word pain (in painting) and maybe that pain is reflected in the bruising-like black and blue, in the heaviness of the shapes and colors, and in the thrashing/whipping-cage-like dark lines. I’m realizing now that there’s A LOT to appreciate about her art. I think she really understood the assignment and aced it in a way that’s anarchic, original, and true (and fits nicely with the rest of your post). Thank you Linda for sharing her eye-opening work!

You made me laugh out loud! The whole idea of AI being more than a little inhuman is annoying in and of itself. The map had me in stitches–Iowa and Idaho in Australia? And Queensland not spelled correctly? You’re absolutely correct; people are too quick to believe whatever they see on the internet, without considering the idiocy of what’s being said. I feel for and fear for our younger kids who are being led down the road to ugly untruths. By the way, I love your daughter’s picture of a watermelon. It’s more real than those AI pictures.

๐ŸคฃI’m not sure that I see a watermelon at all… unless it was run over by a car?? But yes, real people, with real paint, making real marks on real paper is better than anything AI can push out in an instant. And yes – good luck to the next generation indeed!! x

I hope AI dies ๐Ÿ˜ an AI ap for alerting parents of school shootings sent out a false message in a town near where I live. A cop on the radio said Iโ€™m here at the school so the AI picked it up and sent out a message that a mass shooting was taking place at the school. Can you imagine? It lies, it hallucinates, it steals personal data, steals intellectual property, and consumes way too much water and electricity. What the heck is it supposed to be good for?

Oh my goodness I would be a nervous wreck if I received a message about a school shooting – it would take my heart days to recover… and so sad that the next time a real alert went out I’d potentially ignore it because I mistook it for another glitch…

I have had some positive experiences when I asked for advice on how to propagate a plant (for example) but even then, I always end up checking the sources to make sure it’s true – so really all I need to do is google the sources to start with… I worry about the environmental impacts as well – so much resources lost because we’re getting too lazy to put the digital leg work in to look for our own answers… sigh.

In Australia it’s car fuel that’s getting out of contrl (we have a fair bit of solar we can rely on) but also it’s the water that makes me nervous – it’s such a finite commodity… and if you want to get even more into existential dread, then it’s the effect AI’s having on our attention spans and more… good luck! x

Maybe a big solar flare will kill it. I know that would be bad but sometimes, I canโ€™t help think it lol

Oh Linda, I feel your pain with this damn AI rubbish! I detest it in its forms and its sad to see big corporations jumping on board with it. I’m sorry you are being hit with AI BS! I have never attempted to use AI in my photography and never will, doing so completely trashes my work completely.

I think that when you’re a creative person (such as you with your photographs, or me writing these blog posts) it feels so non-creative to rely on computer tools… spell-check: yes / write-it-for-me: no

Stay creative – your eye and sense of wonder is all you need.

I know what you mean Linda! the cool people have termed this phenomena “AI Slop” and it is so apt. It’s getting to a point now where I am consciously shying away from recommendations on all social media feeds because I know that AI Slop will find its way there – except for the dancing pets. I can live with that….to a degree.

that being said though, I have always wanted to take a trip to Iowa, Australia ๐Ÿ˜€

There was a mild sense of excitement on my behalf that I might get to tour Idaho and Iowa without needing a passport… and you’re always welcome to visit me in Quensland if you make the trip to Australia…

As for the dancing pets – just this morning I saw a video of 2 groundhogs, one was getting its nails clipped, and the other was so animated in its sympathetic fear – I loved it… I don’t know if it was “real” or not, which doesn’t diminish the joy I got from laughing, but it does give me the uneasy sense that I’m a fool for that laugh if it’s “slop”…. sigh.

Good luck to the next generation is all I can say!

yes! they are going to need all the help they can get. I have been researching AI media now for a while and until it crosses that uncanny valley of human resemblance I just can’t take it seriously.
