Make a dream-board

You’ve probably heard of the phrase “mood-board” plenty of times before (I know I have, and I’ve written about it here). The idea is that you collect magazine images, postcards, affirmations, fabric swatches etc etc and place them all on a vertical pinboard, lay them in a tray, or use an online tool to copy-paste what you like.

Most mood-boards are typically inspired by ‘something’ – for example, you might be looking for a party-theme or wedding ideas. Perhaps you want to redo your kitchen with a nautical look, in which case your board might include blue and white tiles, pictures of pendant lights made of rope, draw pulls that look like seahorses or rattan bench seats…

You get the idea (and if you’re not sure – then pop over to the screen shot of part of my New Year’s Revelation mood-board here).

Anyway, the other day I heard someone refer to a mood-board as a “dream-board” and I LOVE IT!

Nothing about the approach actually changes, except that now you’re channeling a lot more love and energy into the task – it’s not just a mood that you’re looking for, you’re going to dream big and make magic!

(Yeah, if you’ve been here for a while, you might remember that magical (almost caught-on-fire) moment that I’m alluding to!)

Anyway, inspired to be more than moody, I set about making a dream-board for my garden makeover that I’m planning as a way of spending more time outdoors, and being in my body instead of my head.

And no, we won’t be getting a Chinese pagoda anytime soon, if your eyesight is good enough to spot it in the picture below. However, as an architect, I do love the idea of built forms that double as garden features (think of Monet’s curved green bridge at Giverny).

And yes, if your eyesight is stupendous, that is an emoji-smiling-poo on the back of my phone case. I put the puffy sticker on my new phone a few years ago as a laugh, and wouldn’t you know it, it has stayed there ever since and reminds me to keep smiling when sh!t happens… because if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.

Anyway, enough yapping – here’s my board, as well as me being a bit goofy after I hung it on the wall… oh, and with the magazine pages that I liked too much to cut up, I made a whole panel of inspirational images in the garage… and even started to experiment with collecting things from around the house, to bring some of the dreamy-garden-vibes I was looking for into the lounge room… I got a bit carried away with the whole dream-big thing:

You don’t have to go too big or too bold (I potentially went a bit over the top), but it is possible to create little pockets of aspirational / inspirational moments that remind you that life is good, and filled with glimmers that make you smile and keep you going… keep you growing.

If the idea of a whole pinboard, or a wall in your garage is too much (and let’s face it, the garage addition is undoubtedly not well placed in terms of a fresh breeze – but it’s fun while it lasts), then create a dream-shelf, or dream-side-table, even a dream-object; something that you only have to look at that makes you smile and hold hope for your future.

Come to think of it, most knick-knacks hold that power. I have a dried flower that came from the bouquet my family bought me to celebrate my first PhD presentation (which highlights a past achievement but kept me motivated to keep studying), and a bowl of seashells that came from a beach-holiday (again from the past, but reminds me that the more I heal, the more adventures I can have in the future)…

Memories, moods, shelves, shells, flower-power and pagodas…

Life is lovely, and “Dreams are the touchstones of our character” – Henry David Thoreau

Take care of yourself while taking care, and keep dreaming!

The idea of dreaming seems to be diminishing here in the states. People seem to be so overwhelmed with all that’s happening that they’ve forgotten to look past what might be to what can be if they only refocus. I love color and intensity of your board–it reminds me of the kind of person you are, full of creative ideas that don’t quit. I have a dream/prayer journal that works for me–I’m more wordy (surprise!) than picture-focused. These are great ideas, my friend. I love your outside-of-the-box thinking!

A dream-prayer journal is a fabulous idea – there is so much power in articulating what you hope for, and want to work towards – any way that works for you – fabulous! xx

My entire house is a collage. Almost every single wall is covered with pictures I’ve collected. I never thought of them as a dream board, but that’s what they are, now that I think about it.

My dream board would be overflowing, like yours, Linda. The problem is, I feel like there are not enough hours in the day or energy to do all I want. One thing at a time, I guess. Love to you!

The nice thing about the board is it gives you a space to park your ideas – you can come back to them anytime… but in the meantime you can keep adding new ideas and bask in the anticipation 🥰

I haven’t heard of a mood board—but dream boards and vision boards are quite popular here. We used to make them in my support group. It was so inspirational and fun. Love yours!

I think this is a wonderful way to not only be creative, but to express ourselves, our inner feelings. And have fun!

And judging by your photo, it looks like your dream board energized you! 🙂

In fact, I think this could be an interesting way to journal. Instead of writing out thoughts and feelings, cut and paste things onto a journal page to express it all.

Thanks for sharing this, Linda. Wishing you a sunny and not-too-hot weekend. 🌞

Thank you! 🤩 I do love playing with words, but there is something very visceral or tangible about holding pictures in your hand that brings them closer to reality. You have wonderful artistic expression that lets you feel your ideas, I content myself with other people’s imagery 💚🙌

I like the idea of a dream board because dreams of any kind are good, ok maybe not all dreams if you are dreaming of taking over the world like some James Bond villain that’s not good but other dreams yeah they can be good

😂I can barely keep my house in order! The idea of taking over the world is exhausting! 😂but you’re right; if your dreams benefit you at the expense of everyone else…it might be time for a new dream! 😴

Pretty cool! I read an article about goal vision boards and considered making one this year, but after thinking it over, I realized it’s just not how my brain works. I use a daily planner to keep track of my appointments, to-do lists, and short- and long-term goals. It’s working great, so I thought, “Why change?” But, I can see the value in it; for example, if I’m planning a vacation, it would be fun to use a board to map out what I want to do individually and as a family.

It’s so interesting- I am a very visual learner, and so is one of my daughters (we use color, and mind-mapping, and placement of data on a particular corner of the page to be able to remember it etc), but my hubby and other daughter are bullet-pointers. You do you! But I really like the idea of a communal dream-board that everyone contributes to and gets behind – it would be a great way to motivate everyone and make it a real family experience from the get go! Hmmm… I’m going to think about a “clean house” dream-board and see if I can convince my kids to start vacuuming more!😂

A “clean house” dream-board, now that would be something! You might need to incentivize it with money or something they want, because you know how kids are. 😆 You’re right, we need to find what works best for us according to how we retain information.

I’ve tried bribes but they both have waitressing jobs, so even at 17 and 18 they don’t want my cash if it has to be earnt by “ugh-yuk” activities!
