Dark showering for migraines

Published by

There’s something very mood-affirming about finding out that the way you live, or the strange habits you have acquired over time, are suddenly considered ‘mainstream’ or ‘on trend’.

The first time I felt weirdly vindicated was during the Australian Covid lockdown when everyone had to stay home all day, every day. Like… hellloooo… welcome to my life!

More recently, it was when I discovered that the way I have my evening showers was suddenly a popular talking point that has been exotically named “dark showering”.

In simple terms, dark showering means taking a shower in the dark.

[Disclaimer – remember this is not a medical website, so be cautious about what practices you adopt after reading. Take care also if you suffer from vertigo with your migraine or feel any inclination towards dizziness at any time; you should be careful not to make the room too dark in case it makes your balance worse or harder to see what to hold onto.]

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that my preference for showering in the dark is “a thing”: Dark Showering Is the Calming Nighttime Habit Psychologists Recommend for Better Sleep

As the Real Simple article notes: “Taking a shower is already one of the humblest but most fulfilling self-care acts. The warm water cascading down your back, the scent of your favorite shampoo or body wash doing its work, the way your mind settles. […] In recent months, the ‘dark showering’ trend has surged across social media as more people give it a go and realize it’s actually kind of powerful.”

Bottom line advice: let your morning shower be energizing, but the (sneaky extra) one in the evening be calmer: “By dimming or turning off the lights, you create a sensory cocoon that signals the body to unwind.” As the article explains, your nervous system gets to down-regulate, and your circadian rhythms get a reminder that it’s time to rest.

‘Sensory cocoon’ is the perfect way to describe it, and again, it’s why I thought of a float tank; a small space where your body benefits from a watery embrace while your mind gets to take a break.

The article says there are 5 benefits to dark showering: reduce stress, improve sleep, reset your mood, enhance mindfulness (yay team!), and… ahem… it fosters romance…

OK, that’s not where my healing post was intending to go, but hey… love is lovely.

According to the article, India and Japan both have a long history of evening baths in the dark, as did the ancient Greeks and Romans.

I can’t speak to the ancient history of the idea, but I can tell you that in today’s hectic world, a slow shower in the dark, is just the ticket to a restful night’s sleep… especially if you have lingering migraine pain.

Enjoy… or get well… whatever is more suitable in this moment.

Take care taking care,

Linda x

PS – for those of you who observe, all the best for Easter.

I love it when ‘they’ discover things we’ve been doing for yonks … like opening up the house, even in winter, (for a shorter time, obviously) and freshening the air. I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember, both in OZ and here in Canada, but ‘they’ think it’s the best thing since sliced bread! … silly humans. 😀

I’ve tried this…did not know it was a thing. Thought it was a sensory experiment. My advise; Soap should not lather. If it begins forming shapes resembling sigils, do not interpret them. The soap is not speaking to you. Probably.

I always wonder if the internet isn’t just making up stories and spinning them as ancient traditions – I’ve got no way of validating them – but now that you’re here, I get some extra insight. Enjoy the dark!

I will try this after my surgeon says that I might shower at all. I got my new shoulder on Tuesday, March 31st and am limited to sponge bathing for a bit. I may need some light for that.

Woo hoo! I’ve been thinking about you and your shoulder! So glad the operation is behind you – are you now a bit like the Bionic Woman, all titanium and steel?? Or ceramic? And yes – stay safe in the sunshine for your “spongie”(as we used to call them when we went camping) – there’s plenty of time for dark showers in the future!!

I usually keep the light in the shower off; I think it’s more relaxing that way. Too much lighting is annoying while taking a shower. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Linda.

Who knew we were ahead of the trend? Or that it even was becoming one until now. I’ve always preferred night, with maybe only the TV as a light, if that. I love reading about all the discoveries you find. I’m off visiting friends and family I haven’t seen back home in Michigan for over 36 years. Been here a month and the friend I’m staying with has fixed my room up with nice room darkening shades 🙂 What more could I want, except maybe my dog?

Lulu: “Oh, yeah, our Dada gets up really early and he never turns the light on while he’s showering. At least, not now that the shower in the master bedroom is fixed and there’s a window again to let the moonlight in. He also runs all his screens in ‘Dark Mode’, whatever that is …”

oooohhh… moonlight – that’s extra special…!! And I’m a fan of going dark mode too – screens that is… not witchy-poo evil character arc or anything! 😂

Ah, glad to know I’m not the only one! 🙂

I’ve been showering in the dark – when I can – for years now. Partly to save electricity (no need for the light as there is a frosted window in the shower stall) and partly because I prefer darker, more ambient environments. Easier on the eyes and it makes me feel comfortable.

Hope you have a lovely weekend, Linda. 🌸

It makes me happy to know there are so many of us saving money and the environment by dark showering! And slightly awkward too… it seems slightly voyeuristic to be imagining anyone else in their showers! 😂

Love this. Sometimes the simple, quiet things we’ve been doing all along are actually what our souls needed. Slowing down, dimming the noise, and just being still for a moment… that’s real rest.

Happy and Blessed Easter … 🙏

My migraines are actually cluster headaches, trigeminal pain that starts in my left eye and ear but light doesn’t bother me like sound does. I love showers in sunlight, which I know not everyone can do, but the water blocks sounds and soothes and the sun just makes me happy. I probably get some vitamin D too All of that plus cbd has helped my headaches and fibromyalgia more than anything a doctor gave me. Treats my insomnia too which I think is the heart of my nerve pain

I love dark showering Linda. what I’m looking for is a subdued light setup. I have tried light strips and they work well but sometimes, you want something that’s a little more immersive but I know for that I will need electricians to come in and put circuits into walls. so right now, the light bars are all I can do but they are ok.
    great post! Mike

Keep experimenting – any light which is warm and gentle and not in your eyes is great – just make sure it’s a safe set up with the water and steam zone! All the best for a relaxing week end my friend!
