Laughter as medicine

female friends having fun together

It’s been a rough couple of weeks since my dog passed. His younger sister, a 12-year-old black cavoodle, didn’t eat or sleep for a while. Oh, and she cried each morning when she woke up to find he was still missing. Ugh.

The last post since his passing also wasn’t very cheerful – sorry. So today is all about laughter and merriment. Not because I have already moved on, but because it’s not healthy to stay in the dark for too long or share that darkness across beautiful Blog Land.

In the past I have collated funny stories, such as strange clothes tags in a post on Laundry Madness. I’ve shown pictures of animals doing Serious Side Eye. I also accidentally blundered into the notion of Worshiping False Idols when I came across a meme that described how β€œFor years, an elderly Brazilian woman prayed to what she thought was a figurine of St. Anthony, until she found out it was actually a figure of Elrond from the Lord of the Rings.”

Here’s all the images piled up on top of each other for as many smiles as possible:

Today’s post is similar but different. In our national newspaper they recently published an article revealing the winners of the “Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards” – “More than 10,000 entries were submitted by professional and amateur photographers who wanted to capture the world’s creatures in all their glory.”

Read the full article, and see all the finalists here:

Naughty orangutans and primping praying mantis captured in Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards – ABC News

They were all great, but here’s my favorite 6 shots (cropped tight to fit), with their names and attributions below:

Aren’t they great? I just had to know more about the little angry bird… turns out it’s probably a Regulus regulus or Goldcrest. The competition photo makes him look especially glum, which is unfortunate, because in sideways images, he’s much more aerodynamic and perky!

Strange to say, but this ‘misunderstanding’ reminds me of another ‘funny’ post I did about two years ago. I discovered that one of my daughters had got into my phone and created a photo album of me titled “Cripled Pirate Mother“. In the post I tried to figure out the mystery title, and decided it was because of a single, not particularly flattering, photo of me. In the post, I grumbled and then announced:

One photo is not really enough to define a person.

If it’s recognizable as you, then I suppose it could be an indicative image of who you are.

But a single photo is by definition two-dimensional… it’s flat. Keep flicking through photos and you’ll start to see a more rounded version of a person. Moods will appear, postures will change, side-eye will ensue…

Humans are complicated creatures.

Yes, ok, I am a crippled pirate mother, but I am so much more.

Be careful not to buy into a short-hand version of yourself.

That post ended with a TED talk on “Why you [don’t really] look bad in photos”, I’m going to throw it in again here – because – jokes aside, we all have some low self-esteem days:

Anyway – rambling post today – but I hope it made you smile.

Thanks again for being amazing people! Thanks for helping me, and each other, through life’s rough patches, and sharing laughs when we can – you’re the best!

Take care taking care,

Linda xx

Hmm, that one label with all the percentages supposedly adding up to 100% must be that newfangled math I’ve heard about …

    1. The Mindful Migraine Blog Avatar

Ah yes – the 1001% percentages… I have heard a few politicians have perfected its usage… the rest of us just give it some serious side eye! πŸ™‚

Oona: “That is a lot of epic side eye up there. Oona approves!”
Java Bean: “Ayyy, you could do a lot worse than pray to Elrond, sΓ?”
Chaplin: “Our Mama and Dada used to dog sit for a friend and his dog Saphira was good friends with Dennis. The first time they sat for Saphira after we lost Dennis, she came in tail wagging, looked confused, wandered around the house for a while, and then came up to Dada and started whimpering. We are pretty sure she was looking for Dennis and was upset when she couldn’t find him …”

Yeah, my baby girl is still doing paw-patrol every morning, crying when she doesn’t find him, then sticking to us like velcro in case we magically disappear too… I suspect she can still smell him everywhere which is heartbreaking… πŸ’”Give each other a snuggle tonight pet-peeps!

Hola! Pet mamas (and papas, of course) need time to process that kind of loss. I loved the images, and the TED Talk was super enlightening! I still love looking back at my old photos Not so much listening to my own voice though…

As for the WordPress issue, I’ve been dealing with it too. I had to keep signing in over and over again, and it all started after an update. Thankfully, it seems to finally be keeping me logged in now. Take care and greetings from New Mexico.

    1. The Mindful Migraine Blog Avatar

thanks for the support! and for the feedback – l’m glad it has settled down – fingers crossed it does for me too – it makes visiting others so much harder (I can’t see anyone’s blog links next to their comments anymore – sigh). I’m with you on the voice thing too – I’m used to seeing my face reflected back but not my voice! xx

It’s difficult to lose a pet, so I totally understand, my friend. The tags β€œIt’s never so hot… don’t be that guy” and β€œor give it to your mom” were hilarious.

    1. The Mindful Migraine Blog Avatar

Those tags still make me chuckle – not just because someone thought to write it – but that so many of us are nodding our heads in agreement!

        That’s so true.

The label with washing instruction “give to your mother, she knows how to do it” put a smile on my face. It’s so true! Great post Linda!

The loss of a dog is very difficult and the other dogs grieve too. Our Pug Daisy loved our Japanese Chin Ryu and when Ryu passed she grieved for six months and our Leonberger Bronco thought he saw Ryu whenever we saw a small black and white dog. I am so sorry for the loss of your dog.

Your story about the lady who prayed to Elrond from the Lord of Rings for years reminded me of a friend of mine. The curtains in his bedroom were moving back and forth and he assumed it was a haunting or a demon so he prayed to God every day to exorcise the demon/ghost. Then one day he realized that underneath the curtains there was a heat element. Once he turned it off the curtain stopped moving. He admitted he felt stupid.

About the commenting issues. It seems like everyone has them. I complained to the Happiness Engineers. It is something they are “improving”.

    1. The Mindful Migraine Blog Avatar

Fingers crossed – they can’t improve this commenting situation fast enough – BlogLand is beautiful when we can chat easily to each other and share the love – sigh.

I’ll be laughing about spooky demon-heaters forever now! Poor guy – we’ve all made similar mistakes! Have a great weekend my friend! L πŸ™‚

I’m thinking we need a little payback (lol), why not create a “hidden” folder for them to find πŸ˜‰ and it has a bunch of animals sticking their tongues out! The comments are also phantom like, and I have had several repeat (so embarrassing). Oh, the regulus, Reggie for short, is the cutest (I’m a birder now) and I wish I had the confidence of that mantis. Great post Linda <3 and lots of hugs, and loves to you and your furbaby ~ πŸ™‚

I got it – and I can’t tell you how grateful I am that you ran the gauntlet and went to hell and back to leave a comment for me! πŸ˜˜πŸ’•

This was a fantastic post and those animal pictures!!!! your side eyes!!! i am sending you long distance love and hugs. My husband passed several months ago and were it not for my Fabulous Dog Jack? don’t think i’d still be here. Big hugs to your sibling dog too! One moment at a time and deeeeep breath. Alternate nostril seems to really help. Oh and thank you for making me feel less like an ignoramus…that comment stuff was and is…challenging.

    1. The Mindful Migraine Blog Avatar

I’m so sorry for your loss, and I am so glad that I could bring a little light into your life 🌟the alternate nostril breathing is powerful – I do it often (complete with side-eyeing from other people!)✨as for the strange glitch with commenting, I really hope that it is short-lived, because it makes being in blogland a little bit harder and slower which is a terrible shame; I love it so much here!

Thanks for the laughs, Linda. I’m glad you’re working through the grieving process. Being a long time dog father, I understand.

I’ve been having issues with leaving comments on blogs, as well. Started a few days ago, but it seems to be working better now.

    Best wishes to you. 🌷

    1. The Mindful Migraine Blog Avatar

Fingers crosse WP has worked it out – but I still think there is something wrong, because when I see your name beside the comment, it no longer lets me use it to link to your blog… sigh… it makes it much harder to pop over and say hi!

Great post Linda! I laughed! Thanks for that, and you don’t look like a crippled pirate mum. πŸ˜‚ I have noticed that several blogs I visit I must ;og in to post even though I was never logged out. Others have mentioned Blocks? I don’t use that interface but use the old one via a plugin. I hope you can get logged in!

πŸ˜‚βœ¨I’m ok with being a pirate, and crippled, I’m just not loving the fact she got into my phone without me noticing! As for the changes – ugh – I hope it gets sorted out soon because it makes it so much harder to get out and chat to others! Even now, your name comes up at my end, but not the link to your blog, so I can’t just pop across…. grrr… ah well – I’m trying to keep a smile on πŸ˜‚βœ¨
