Pet rocks and pebbling people

Published by

Many, many months ago, I wrote a post about ‘penguin-pebbling’ (here). It’s a lovely little bit of romance-rizz where a penguin creates an attractive pile of rocks to woo his intended love interest… or any love interest… I’m not sure if penguins mate for life… or how flirty they are…

More recently, I wrote a post Doodle your pain away. My blog-friend, the lovely Barbara (aka ghostmmnc) replied by saying that she turns her doodles into bookmarks and leaves them in random places for people to find, keep and enjoy. She sent me a link to her blog to show me the sorts of bookmarks she makes – and included in the post were some painted rocks that she also makes, and then hides throughout her hometown:

I absolutely LOVE the idea of making art – and – rather than clinging to it, just letting it go… no… not ‘just’ letting it go – letting it go with the full intention of it becoming a treasure that will delight someone else!

How fabulous!

In my mind, I’m not sure if I would pick up a painted rock I found… I would worry that it was someone else’s special rock… perhaps misplaced… and that they might come back for it… I’m not sure what that says about me, but regardless, I would see the painted treasure and smile at the small rock and its big personality and let it rest for others to oh and ah over.

It got me thinking about my own ‘rock collection’. In a post from 2024: The Art of Distraction, I photographed a sewing craft I made, with a small collection of rocks beside it (the large one has a perfectly flat base which I love, and then there’s two almost completely circular round pebbles on a stone plinth that’s almost so perfectly flat and square it could be a mosaic tile (maybe it is?)):

a long stitch sewing craft with the word LOVE on it and some rocks nearby

I also discovered an old photo of my daughter clutching a ‘pet-rock’ that Grandad had found on the family farm and drawn eyes and ears onto to make it look like a tailless mouse, or perhaps a teeny-tiny guinea pig:

a pet rock that looks like a mouse

I don’t know where that pet-rock ended up… but I do know that I (and my extended family) still collect rocks with spots and dots and dashes… and enjoy the simple (mindful) pleasure of keeping your eyes peeled for the small treasures Mother Nature gifts us.

[I’ll be honest and say that as I put pen to rock, I panicked a bit. As a trained architect, graffiti is one of my pet peeves – I can’t stand people who deface buildings… so as I wrote the words on the rock, I had a moment of self-disgust; who was I to damage this natural beauty? Jury’s still out on whether I’ve fully recovered…]

Overall, I really love the spirit of generosity that comes from giving things away – not because you no longer need it, but because you think another person might need it more.

That’s what love is, I guess.

Take care out there pebbly-peeps, of yourself & each other,

Linda xox

PS – I’ll visit the park over the new few days / posts and give you updates on the status of the “you rock” rock, and whether it gets picked up or not.

PPS – last year I mentioned a new text-sign-off that I love; a pom-pom-woo-hoo that perfectly channels my cheerleading vibes:

Well, Barbara’s blog uses another that I’m also now very fond of – a lovely little butterfly:

}i{

Thanks to all of you, who each in your own way, fill the world with your clever quirky creative kindness – you all make me smile!

: )

We found that people left painted rocks around campgrounds when we were full-time RVing. It was always fun to run across a painted rock.

I love the idea of making art and giving it away, even if it’s a rock with a message. (And I do think you’re safe having written on that rock–it adds character to the stone.) My little sister has been collecting rocks that look like hearts for years, some incredibly detailed and lifelike. And when people visit her, she lets them pick out a rock to take with them. It’s a beautiful thing to share a treasure with someone else.

How lovely – I’ve only ever come across a couple of heart-rocks, so it feels even more generous to give them away. The reality is, we can’t hold onto everything, so if someone else can love it more, then I say yay! xx

A lovely message. It’s funny, because just the other day, I was walking and as I took a step, I saw a beautiful rock. Yes, I know… come on, someone might say, but it was a beautiful one. Black, and smooth in an unlikely spot, middle of the sidewalk. It looked like a rock that belongs on the beach. As you mentioned, in a way, I felt that someone had taken this rock out of its rightful home and here I found it. I did pick it up. Wondered if I should keep it, but then placed it next to the tree to be in nature. I do believe in the healing powers of rocks. Cute photos in your blog. Let’s find some rocks!

Isn’t it strange how a moment of joy can also leave us a bit conflicted! I too think rocks belong in nature, but I still have my ‘believe’ rock with me… it is my main exception! xx

Don’t they just! I always feel grounded when I touch my rock, which was, admittedly part of the ground! 🥰

I love the idea of putting something like a positive message rock out in the wild for someone to find. We need more random acts of kindness and positivity in the world.

On a similar note, a friend informed me that someone in her neighborhood set up a “Free Art Library”. It’s like those little Free Library boxes that people set up for others to donate books and others to pick them up to read. But with the art library, people can donate bits of art (small canvases, a tiny sculpture) that others can take home with them to brighten their lives.

Here’s hoping we see more things like these in the future. 🙂

Oh I love the idea of a free art library! We have a street library nearby which I occasionally donated old toys too (it felt a bit sneaky, but it was near a preschool and they always got picked up)… the idea of a dedicated toy / art spot is great!

When I was young I watched Doraemon’s episode in which Nobita ( the main character) was not allowed to have pet so doraemon made him a pet rock with his gadget .

I think having a pet rock as a substitute to a real pet is a bit iffy – but sometimes you have to make the most of what you get given! Did Norbita name his pet rock?

‘kuro’ – as in black? There you go! I do love my shiny black “believe” rock and now, when it is face down, I might call it Kuro too! All the best for your new friendship with Mr Rock! 🙂

My Mom always liked collecting different kinds of rocks. I am not too young to remember the “pet rock” days. Rocks are fun.
